Abstract

The potential suitability of thin slices of fresh tumor tissue for the in vitro testing of antitumor drugs was studied. With a simple device, sets of tumor slices of equal thickness were produced rapidly with minimal cellular damage. The sections showed a reproducible stable incorporation of 3H-thymidine for incubation periods of more than 24 h. Preliminary data on the effect of cytotoxic drugs on sections of xenografts of human squamous cell carcinoma revealed a distinct correlation between their in vitro effects on 3H-thymidine incorporation and their in vivo sensitivity in nude mice.
