Acute myocardial infarction: 'telomerasing' for cardioprotection

Trends in Molecular Medicine
Fabian Sanchis-Gomar, Alejandro Lucia

Abstract

Reactivating the telomerase gene through gene therapy after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has been recently reported to improve survival in mice. Given that regular physical exercise also activates this gene, therapeutic and lifestyle interventions targeting telomerase need to be explored as possible additions to the current armamentarium for myocardial regeneration.
