An immunological factor in epilepsy

Abstract

It is proposed that epileptic discharges could be the result of an autoimmune response to either an antigen released during tissue destruction or an infective agent. A possible mechanism involves the blocking by antibodies of transmitter receptor sites at synapses, whereby synaptic transmission is reduced.
