At the therapist's mercy

Abstract

The writer thinks that chemotherapy in Psychiatry should refer to a theoretical model. Freyhan's target-symptom is not a sufficient one. The one he suggests deals with the phenomenological position of the patient. Besides, chemotherapy must in principle be a monotherapy, toxic and side-effects should be taken into account. Finally long-term treatments by neuroleptics and tricyclic anti-depressants may come to light as more harmful than beneficial.
