Abstract

87 children aged 2-14 years with hypoacusis caused by secretory otitis media were examined and treated surgically. The diagnosis was made basing on the data obtained at otomicroscopy and tympanometry which in combination with tonal and speech hearing examinations provided quantitation and staging of the middle ear affection. It is suggested that morphologically and audiologically secretory otitis media undergoes four clinical stages: pre-exudative, primarily serous exudative, primarily mucous exudative, tympanosclerotic.
