Clubfoot--advances in diagnosis and management

Australian Family Physician
Kelly Gray, Paul J Gibbons

Abstract

Congenital talipes equinovarus--or clubfoot--is a common paediatric condition of unknown cause. This article presents two case studies and outlines the diagnosis, treatment, referral pathways and expected outcomes in patients with clubfoot. A significant change in treatment has occurred over the past decades, both in Australia and internationally, with the focus shifting from surgical to conservative management. Education of general practitioners in this area has the potential to facilitate early referral and help allay parental anxiety.
