Abstract

The presence of chronic ear disease in patients with profound SNHL presents a challenge to the otologic surgeon and was considered, in the past, a contraindication to cochlear implantation. This review discusses options for cochlear implantation in patients with chronically diseased ears. Several management options are available for cochlear implantation in patients with chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Cochlear implantation can be safely achieved in patients with CSOM. The approach chosen should be individualized based on clinical findings.
