Could Prevalence of Human Rhinosporidiosis be Attributed to Distribution of Rhinosporidium seeberi in Natural Water Bodies?

Abstract

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous tropical infectious disease that often manifests as a papillomatous vascular polypoidal granulomata, primarily involving the nasal mucosa. Epidemiological data on the prevalence rates of rhinosporidiosis in Southern India are seemingly scarce. Here, we aimed at exploring the prevalence of human rhinosporidiosis as well as the potential risk factors of its acquisition by availing data from a tertiary health care setting in Thiruvarur district of Tamilnadu, India. The study included retrospective analyses of histopathological data collected during a 3-year study period, from 101 patients with a presumptive diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis. Of the 101 cases examined, nasal rhinosporidiosis was confirmed in 46 (45.5%) cases, while the remaining 55 patients who tested negative for rhinosporidiosis histopathology were diagnosed of benign allergic inflammatory nasal polyps. Of the 46 cases diagnosed of rhinosporidiosis, 26 were males and the remaining females. Among the rhinosporidiosis cases of both the genders, the 11-20 years age-group was found to be predominantly infected.
