Current concepts in the pathogenesis of celiac disease

Abstract

This paper is a critical appraisal of current hypotheses on the mechanisms of toxicity of wheat and other cereals in coeliac disease. The "primary immune defect" and the "gluten-lectin" hypotheses on the pathogenesis of coeliac disease are examined and critically reviewed.
