Abstract

Pregnancy is an important independent risk factor for diabetic retinopathy. This risk is increased with diabetes duration, bad metabolic control, diastolic hypertension, renal disease, anemia, rapid reduction of Hb A1c level and severity of baseline retinopathy. Retinal examination must be done at onset of pregnancy and every 3 months thereafter until 3 months after delivery. Eye fundus will be controlled every month if retinopathy occurs in patients with risk factors. Laser treatment is as efficient during pregnancy as usually.
