Abstract

Human actinomycosis is caused by Actinomyces israellii and other Actinomyces spp. together with Arachnia spp. These are common commensal bacteria which colonize many body surfaces. Infection of damaged tissues follows trauma, surgery and so on. This article outlines the techniques available for detecting these organisms and actinomycosis infection.
