Experimental partial reconstruction of the esophagus using a free transplant of the small intestine

Abstract

Partial replacement of the esophagus was carried out in 20 dogs by means of free transplantation of a small bowel segment with vascular anastomosis to the aorta and v. azygos magna. Intestinal electromyography was used for vitality control in all cases and turned out reliable results. 15% of the cases showed thrombosis of the venous anastomosis with intestinal necrosis.
