Factors Associated With Interest in Working With Older Adults: Implications for Educational Practices

Abstract

The aging population has created a pressing need for specialists in geriatrics. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the predictors of interest in working with older adults among students enrolled in or planning to enroll in a health science program, using an existing data set. The study was guided by Super's theory of vocational development. Multiple regression, with a significance level of p < 0.05, was used for the analysis. Positive images of older adults and the participants' current amount of contact were significant predictors of interest in working with older adults, whereas negative images and prior amount of contact with older adults were not. Results suggest implications for curriculum design and educational programs to increase the workforce in geriatrics practice, which are discussed.
