Abstract

From October to June 1987 a study was carried out on 250 healthy women of child-bearing age in an attempt to determine the relationship between the value of Ferritin (F) and ferropenic anemia, habits, occupation, medical history, and the symptoms present at the time of examination. A statistically significant relation was found between F less than 10 ng and asthenia, tachycardia, anorexia, heavy menstrual flow, V.C.M., and intake of vegetable fiber. The value of F is a very reliable indicator for the diagnosis of iron depletion and consequent ferropenic anemia. The presence of abundant menstrual flow, intake of toxic substances, as well as dietary habits, should all be taken in consideration in order to prevent frequent ferropenic anemia in women.
