Gastric acid secretion and duodenal ulcer healing during treatment with omeprazole. A Scandinavian Multicentre Study

Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology

Abstract

Twenty-seven duodenal ulcer patients were treated with omeprazole, 40 mg daily for 4 weeks. The peak acid output to pentagastrin measured 24 h after dosing was reduced by 54% on day 3 of the study and by 74% on day 14. The ulcers in 25 of 26 patients had healed by the end of the treatment period, and 1 patient was unable to attend the final endoscopy. Ulcer symptoms were relieved rapidly. The drug was well tolerated, and few adverse reactions were reported.
