How can non-nucleated platelets be so smart?

Abstract

In their interesting article on the interaction of Escherichia coli with platelets, published in the XXXX issue of this Journal [1], Moriarty and co-workers stated that E. coli induced platelet aggregation with a short lag time in αIIbβ3- and FcγRIIa-dependent manners, and that aggregation was enhanced by, but not dependent on, complement formation. The authors also indicated that E. coli-induced platelet aggregation was inhibited by the αIIbβ3 inhibitor tirofiban and the anti-FcγRIIa antibody IV.3, but was unaffected by the GPIbα inhibitor AN51. Interestingly, E. coli induced full thromboxane B2 synthesis and platelet aggregation. Moreover, a lipopolysaccharide failed to stimulate platelet aggregation in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and had no effect on thromboxane B2 synthesis. This article is protected by copyright.
