Impact of Low Activity of Daily Living on the Prognosis of Patients with Critical Limb Ischemia and Sarcopenia

Abstract

We aimed to investigate the impact of low activity of daily living (ADL) on the long-term outcomes after infrainguinal bypass surgery in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) and sarcopenia. In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, 110 patients with CLI who underwent infrainguinal bypass between April 2011 and September 2016 were divided into 4 groups according to the presence or absence of sarcopenia before surgery and ADL at discharge (Normal group: absence of sarcopenia and normal ADL [Barthel Index ≥60]; Low ADL alone group: absence of sarcopenia and abnormal ADL [Barthel Index <60]; Sarcopenia alone group: presence of sarcopenia and normal ADL; Sarcopenia and low ADL group: presence of sarcopenia and abnormal ADL). Three-year overall survival (OS) and amputation-free survival (AFS) were compared among the 4 groups using the Kaplan-Meier method, and Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the unadjusted and adjusted associations between patient characteristics and 3-year OS and AFS.
