Abstract

26 cases of malaria were reported in Poland in 2002. All cases were imported: 20 from Africa and 6 from Asia. Most of the cases (15) were caused by Plasmodium falciparum. 17 cases were men, 9 were women. Mean age was 40. The youngest patient was 11, the oldest 71. Table I presents complete [table see: text] list of cases by gender (M-male, K-female), age, etiologic factor and presumed country of infection. In only 4 cases some kind of chemoprophylaxis was documented. In other prophylaxis was not used or not documented. One death resulted from falciparum malaria in Poland in 2002.
