Melancholia as a secondary disease. On the coincidence of endogenous depression with another psychiatric disease

Abstract

Melancholias (endogenous depression) not only occur in previously psychically healthy individuals, but also in patients with neurotic and personality disorders, in addicted patients, schizophrenics, in brain-damaged patients and psychically ill geriatric patients, epileptics and mentally handicapped. This concurrence has received little attention in the past; dual diagnoses are still uncommon in psychiatry. The nosological, diagnostic and therapeutic implications are discussed.
