Abstract

With the development of nanotechnology, metal-containing nanoparticles are used widely in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases. The neurotoxicity of these nanoparticles has drawn attention. Glial cells (particularly microglial cells and astrocytes) have important functions in the CNS. Neural disorders are related to functional/histologic damage to glial cells. Dysfunctions of microglial cells or astrocytes injure the brain, and cause the neurodegeneration seen in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. We have summarized the route of access of metal-containing nanoparticles to the CNS, as well as their neurotoxicity and potential molecular mechanisms involved in glial cells. Metal-containing nanoparticles cross or bypass the blood-brain barrier, access the CNS and cause neurotoxicity. The potential mechanisms are related to inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA and/or mitochondrial damage and cell death, all of which are mediated by microglial cell activation, inflammatory factor release, generation of reactive oxygen species, apoptosis and/or autophagy in glial cells. Moreover, these processes increase the burden of the CNS and even accelerate the occurrence or development of neur...Continue Reading

Astrocytes in Parkinson Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons. Some PD-genes may be associated with astrocyte dysfunction. Discover the latest research on astrocytes in Parkinson's disease here.

Parkinson's Disease & Autophagy

Autophagy leads to degradation of damaged proteins and organelles by the lysosome. Impaired autophagy has been implicated in several diseases. Here is the role of autophagy in Parkinson’s disease.

Blood Brain Barrier Chips

The blood brain barrier (BBB) is comprised of endothelial cells that regulate the influx and outflux of plasma concentrations. Lab-on-a-chip devices allow scientists to model diseases and mechanisms such as the passage of therapeutic antibodies across the BBB. Discover the latest research on BBB chips here.

Blood Brain Barrier & Cytokines

Some cytokines are able to cross the blood brain barrier through transport systems and enter the cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid spaces. Here is the latest research on cytokines crossing the blood brain barrier and how this can affect tissues within the CNS.

Autophagy & Model Organisms

Autophagy is a cellular process that allows degradation by the lysosome of cytoplasmic components such as proteins or organelles. Here is the latest research on autophagy & model organisms

Autophagy & Disease

Autophagy is an important cellular process for normal physiology and both elevated and decreased levels of autophagy are associated with disease. Here is the latest research.

Astrocytes

Astrocytes are glial cells that support the blood-brain barrier, facilitate neurotransmission, provide nutrients to neurons, and help repair damaged nervous tissues. Here is the latest research.

Alzheimer's Disease: Microglia

Microglia are a type of glial cell found throughout the brain and spinal cord. Microglia have been found to be associated with Alzheimer's disease development and progression. Here are the latest discoveries pertaining to Alzheimer's disease and microglia.

Autophagy leads to degradation of damaged proteins and organelles by the lysosome. Impaired autophagy has been implicated in several diseases. Here is the role of autophagy in Parkinson’s disease.

Astrocytes & Neurodegeneration

Astrocytes are important for the health and function of the central nervous system. When these cells stop functioning properly, either through gain of function or loss of homeostatic controls, neurodegenerative diseases can occur. Here is the latest research on astrocytes and neurodegeneration.

Apoptosis

Apoptosis is a specific process that leads to programmed cell death through the activation of an evolutionary conserved intracellular pathway leading to pathognomic cellular changes distinct from cellular necrosis
