Abstract

Four cases of herpes zoster with prolonged severe pain illustrate the dilemma that specific antiviral therapy cannot be instituted at onset of symptoms in the cases that would most benefit from such therapy: In all four cases the characteristic skin eruption was preceded by severe, but unspecific, pain for several days.
