Abstract

Public awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder has grown in the wake of the natural and perpetrated disasters of the past 20 years. Sally Meekin's role as nursing adviser to the Police Authority in Northern Ireland has given her a unique perspective of the devastating effects of atrocity on witnesses and survivors. She describes the effects of the condition and the methods health-care staff use to diagnose and treat sufferers.
