Abstract

A 60-year-old white woman with a history of breast cancer, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, and chronic renal insufficiency presented with stiffness in her arms and legs of 3 months' duration. She had undergone multiple MRI and magnetic resonance angiography examinations with gadolinium-containing contrast media over the last 2 years. Complete physical examination including thorough skin examination; laboratory examinations including CBC, urinalysis, serum creatinine, protein electrophoresis and C-reactive protein; antinuclear antibody assay; Westergren erythrocyte sedimentation rate; and an excisional skin biopsy. Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (also known as nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy). Symptomatic treatment, physical therapy, and a brief trial of imatinib mesylate.

Biomarkers for Type 2 Diabetes

Biomarkers can help understand chronic diseases and assist in risk prediction for prevention and early detection of diseases. Here is the latest research on biomarkers in type 2 diabetes, a disease in which the body is unable to produce or properly use insulin.

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) occurs when antibodies directed against the person's own red blood cells (RBCs) cause them to burst (lyse), leading to an insufficient number of oxygen-carrying red blood cells in the circulation. Discover the latest research on AIHA here.
