Special problems of amplification in the elderly

The Journal of Otolaryngology
M Wheeler-Leff

Abstract

Audiological impairments, including recruitment and poor speech discrimination, in the presence of other socio-psychological factors influence the communication skills and needs in the elderly. Physical limitations may make manipulation of hearing aids difficult. Understanding of the patient's individual needs, combined with counselling and follow-up, is necessary to ensure that amplification is being utilized appropriately.
