Abstract

We studied the concentrations of 5-fluorouracil in the serum and tissues of the patients with carcinoma of the cervix to whom UFT or 5-FU had been preoperatively administered. 5-FU concentration in the tumorous tissue showed a significantly high level in the UFT group (0.110 +/- 0.079 microgram/g), compared with the 5-FU group (0.052 +/- 0.042 microgram/g) (p less than 0.05). 5-Fluorouracil concentration in the serum and normal tissues showed a trend of being higher in the UFT group, although there was no significant difference. Thus, it is presumed that, in the cervical carcinoma, UFT has greater efficacy in producing high concentration of 5-fluorouracil in the tumor and elevating antitumor activity than 5-FU.
