Abstract

The authors studied three oral contraceptives (Bisecurin, Ovidon, Rigevidon) in 37 healthy women in order to establish their effect on serum lipids, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and d-glucaric acid excretion. After 3-9 months of oral contraception, a significant increase was observed in serum cholesterol and beta-lipoprotein levels in women taking the two contraceptives with major hormone content. None of the contraceptives changed the serum glyceride level. Serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels were significantly enhanced. D-glucaric acid excretion increased. There was no correlation between the parameters of enzyme induction and the change of lipid metabolism.

Serum cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein B (APOB)-containing lipoproteins (very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), immediate-density lipoprotein (IDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), lipoprotein A (LPA)) and the total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio are all connected in diseases. Here is the latest research.
