Abstract

Estimating the impact of pneumococcal disease amongst adults living in Bogota, Colombia. The impact of pneumococcal disease was studied by combining a systematic literature search with analysing routine sources regarding mortality, consultation and hospitalisation dates due to pneumonia and meningitis. The occurrence of 6,585 cases of pneumonia by all germs was estimated for 2008 in the adult population aged over 60, 689 cases being due to Streptococcus pneumonia, and 73 cases of meningitis, plus 12 cases caused by pneumococcus. The total of deaths from pneumonia was estimated to be 1,910 cases (82 due to pneumonia) and 40 deaths occurred from meningitis (7 of these cases being due to pneumococcal meningitis). The impact of pneumococcal disease in adults aged over 60 in Bogota (only taking into account cases of meningitis and pneumonia with blood and CSF isolates) justifies considering specific prevention strategies such as vaccination.
