Abstract

The GABA precursor progabide, the GABA-aminotransferase inhibitor valproate, and the GABA receptor agonist baclofen increased the resistance of mice and rats to ischemia of the brain in two different modes. Both time and dose curves of the neuroprotective and hypothermal effects correlated in individual animals within a group, but there was no correlation for different series. Probably hypothermia is just one of the components in the mechanism of the neuroprotective effect of GABAergic compounds.
