Abstract

For the treatment of schizophrenic disorders numerous therapeutic methods are available. A pharmacological therapy forms the foundation, atypical antipsychotic drugs are preferred now. After remission of the acute symptoms, treatment with antipsychotics is necessary to prevent recurrence. Cognitive behavior therapy is the most important among the psychotherapeutic methods. The primary care physician can contribute to the early diagnosis and beginning of treatment by promptly referring the patient to a specialist. Frequently, the physician is also involved in conducting and monitoring the drug treatment for preventing recurrence. He cares about physical complaints described by the patient in connection with the schizophrenic disease, which could be the expression of serious somatic diseases or drug side effects.
