British Journal of Nursing : BJN
Anne McLeod

Abstract

Trauma to the central nervous system can have devastating consequences on the person who sustained the injury and his/her family and loved ones. This article reviews the mechanisms of traumatic injury as these can determine the type of injury sustained. Additionally, primary and secondary injuries are explored. This is the first of two articles; the second article will appear in the next issue and will explore nursing considerations in the care of this patient group.
